Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for Programmable Attenuators

1) What are the pros and cons of solid-state versus relay programmable attenuators?

Solid-State Pros

  • Typical MTBF = 250,000 hours
  • Excellent attenuation repeatability
  • Switching speed (microseconds)

Solid-State Cons

  • Increased harmonic distortion
  • Lower input power

Relay Pros

  • Wide frequency range (works at DC)
  • Higher input power
  • Low harmonic distortion

Relay Cons

  • Switching speed (milliseconds)
  • (1 million operations per relay typical)

2) Can I use a solid-state programmable attenuator to perform handover or signal fading simulation?

Yes. JFW supplies programmable attenuators and handover test systems to network providers performing fading simulations of cell phone signals.

3) Are the programmable attenuators bi-directional?

All of JFW’s programmable attenuators are bi-directional unless noted differently on the specification sheet.

4) I need a custom programmable attenuator designed. How much are your typical NREs (non-recurring engineering charge)?

JFW does not charge NREs. Please send your custom requirement to sales@jfwindustries.com.
